Summer ICO farm tours are back!

Come down to Duxbury to see the majesty of the bay for yourself!
Why we are going?
This is a great opportunity to get to see how our oysters go from spawn to seed to fully grown oysters ready to shuck – all while getting to know your farmers!
What are the steps to sign up for the trip?
  1. Talk to your scheduling manager and let them know you would like to sign up for a particular farm trip day & confirm you have that time free to attend the trip.
  2. Fill out a form below for the date you would like to attend.
  3. You will get a confirmation email once you have signed up for a tour date.
  4. A week prior, you will receive an email confirming your spot on the trip, and any other important information to attend the tour.
  5. Show up on time, if not early, and have fun!

The ICO Farm Family
The farm crew will show you the ropes out on the oysterplex, take you through hatchery operations, and give you a glimpse of the brand spankin’ new facilities.
Helpful terms to know prior to attending
Glossary of Terms

Phytoplankton: algae, oyster food

Algae: phytoplankton, oyster food

Cultures: Starter form of algae that we can use photosynthesis to grow into the quantities we need

Seed: baby oyster

Spawn: reproduce

Ktube: Large tubes used at 3rd stage of algae growth

Upweller: A water flow system that pushes nutrient-rich water up through the nursery or silos to feed oyster seed.

Downweller: A water flow system usually used to set spat on microcultch.

Flupsy:  floating upweller system

Broodstock: prototype adult oysters used for spawning

Cultch: finely ground bits of oyster shell used for the seed organisms to latch onto as larvae

Skif: type of boat used on the farm with a flat bottom to access on the mud flats most easily

Dredge: a tool used on the higher tides to access the oysters and bring them up to sort and bag

OysterPlex: Floating house that is the farm crew’s office where culling, sorting, tagging, and bagging happens

What dates are tours being held?
May 29th– Tuesday– start at 10:00am
June 26th– Tuesday– start at 9:30am
July 24th– Tuesday– start at 9:30am
August 13th– Monday- start at 1pm
Each tour is approximately 3 1/2 hours
